The primary difference between G Suite and Google Workspace is that G Suite was a collection of online tools meant to improve communication, collaboration, and productivity, whereas Google Workspace focuses on providing the same functionality in a more specialized way for remote/hybrid work situations.

G Suite was launched in 2006 and included tools like Gmail, Hangouts, Calendar, and Drive for communication and collaboration. It also has tools like Docs, Sheets, and Slides for productivity.

On the other hand, Google Workspace was launched in 2020 and includes all of the same tools as G Suite but with additional features meant for dealing with remote work, such as security and compliance tools along with focus on collaboration to save time.

In this article, we compare G Suite vs Google Workspace to help you know how they differ.

G Suite vs Google Workspace: What changed?

Google Workspace is the rebranding of  G Suite that provides all the features of G Suite including:

    • Communication tools: Gmail, Hangouts, Calendar, and Drive for communication and collaboration.
    • Productivity tools: Docs, Sheets, and Slides for productivity.

The main change between G Suite and Google Workspace is the addition of security and compliance tools in the latter. These include:

    • Advanced threat protection: Uses machine learning to protect against phishing and malware attacks.
    • Data loss prevention: Prevents sensitive data from being accidentally shared.
    • Mobile device management: Manages and secures mobile devices that are accessing your Google Workspace account.
    • Information barriers:  Prevents certain users from seeing each other’s information.
    • Archiving and eDiscovery:  Helps search for and export data for compliance purposes.
    • Endpoint management:   Manages and secures the devices that are accessing your Google Workspace account.

These tools are meant to help organizations keep their data secure, even when employees are working remotely. Google Workspace also includes new features for its productivity apps, such as the ability to create video meetings in Docs and live stream presentations in Slides.

Besides, Google Workspace also comes with an essential starter plan that is free for  users having a business email. However, it does not include Gmail!

G Suite vs Google Workspace Detailed comparison

Now that you know the basics of G Suite and Google Workspace, let’s take a more detailed look at how they compare:

    • Better Collaboration: G Suite had introduced Google Docs, Hangouts, and Calendar to ensure that the work was done in a team and also on time. Google workspace has included all of these with an additional feature of video meetings in Docs and live stream presentations in Slides.
    • Less app switching: In G Suite various apps like Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc were loosely coupled. So, the user had to switch between them while completing a task. Google workspace has focused on creating an ecosystem where users can finish their tasks without leaving the app. For example, a user can now create a video meeting in Docs without leaving the app.  You can also preview a linked file without opening a new tab, which means less time spent switching between applications and more time doing actual work.
    • Meet Limit: G Suite allowed a maximum of 250 participants in Google meet while Google Workspace allows for a maximum of 500 participants in its Business Plus and Enterprise plans.
    • Reinforcing human connections: Google workspace has included features like video meetings in Docs and live stream presentations in Slides to help reinforce human connections. It is important for remote workers who may feel isolated from their colleagues. G Suite also included Hangouts which is a messaging app but it didn’t have video meetings or live stream presentations.
    • Improved Admin console:  G Suite had an admin console to manage users, but it was difficult to use. Google Workspace includes a new admin console where business owners can easily manage everything from one single place. It includes adding and removing users, managing user permissions, setting up billing, etc.
    • Adaptable to Frontline workers: G Suite was not adapted to frontline workers. However, Google Workspace has opened up communication and collaboration channels between frontline workers and corporate teams in a safe and secure way. Workspace Frontline is a custom solution that includes communication and collaboration apps like Gmail, Chat, Docs, Drive, and more, as well as business-grade support and security features like advanced endpoint management that help keep a company’s data secure.

G Suite vs Google Workspace Pricing

As far as pricing is concerned, Google Workspace follows the same pricing structure as G Suite with a little variation in the plans as shown below:

    G Suite

    Basic$6/user/month
    Business$12 /user/month
    Enterprise$25 /user/month

    Google Workspace

    Business Starter$6 /user/month
    Business Standard$12 /user/month
    Business Plus$18 /user/month
    EnterpriseCustomizable

This new pricing model of Workspace applies only to business customers. There is no change to Google’s education and non-profit pricing.

    Conclusion

The rebranding of G Suite to Google Workspace  is more than just a name change. Google has made some significant changes to the product, including new features and integrations that make it easier for users to get work done without switching between apps. The new pricing model also makes it more affordable for businesses of all sizes to use the productivity suite. Overall, the changes that Google has made with its rebranding shows that the company is committed to making its productivity suite more user-friendly and accessible to everyone. So why wait, give it a try today!
